Class Presentation - September 2019

Topic Web Key Words

15th October 2019

This week we have been adapting the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have been changing the characters and the setting of the story e.g. Goldilocks and the Three Lions and creating our own versions of the story.

After half term, we will looking at instruction writing and Guy Fawkes, as well as Remembrance Day. To support this, over half term you could try and do some cooking with your children, paying particular attention to reading and following the steps in order of the recipe. Go and see your local war memorial. Visit a firework display. Don’t forget to keep reading with your children – anything counts! Have you been on a conker hunt?

10th October 2019

This week Year 1 have been continuing to use the story of Goldilocks and the three bears to support our reading and writing. The children have been using actions to help them remember the story. They have then been using this to help them write the story, remembering to use their finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. We have been reading the story together and using the pictures to think about the characters actions and feelings.

In Maths the children have continued to build on their knowledge of number. They have been learning about number facts to ten and using their number bonds. They have been practicing their 5 and 10 times tables by counting up to 100 and back again.

The seasons continue to be our focus with printing of leaves, sponge printing and looking at the changing colours of autumn. Maybe you could discuss what you see with your child when out walking or go Conker picking. Seasons have also been our focus in science while in Geography we keep the focus around our locality and where we live.

We hope your child has enjoyed their week at school and we all look forward to another busy week next week. Keep an eye out for your child bringing home their tricky words to learning in their reading bag. If your child gets on very well with this you could challenge them with learning to spell them. We will be looking out for them in their reading and writing.

What another fantastic week we have had in Kestrel class.

Literacy:
We have spent the last couple of weeks focussing on the traditional tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This week we have been learning to recite the story using a text map as well as sequencing the story using pictures. We have been working hard with our phonics to segment and blend words to write sentences about the story. We really enjoyed acting the story out with the character masks.

Maths:
We have been learning all about addition and subtraction and are all feeling much more confident finding one more and one less than a given number. We have enjoyed singing lots of number songs such as 'Five little men in a flying saucer' which links with our music topic to recite memorable songs. We have also been working on our counting and have been doing lots of active counting with BBC super movers.

Topic:
In Science we have been exploring the seasons. It is the perfect time of year to observe how the trees and weather is changing. We have been talking about all the ways we can ensure we wrap up warm as winter draws closer.

In Geography we have been thinking about where we live and the local area. We all know that the place we live has a name called an address. See if you can learn your address over the weekend. We have also been thinking about travel and the ways different people get to school.

In Art and RE we have been thinking about the festival Diwali. We have created some beautiful Mehndi and Rangoli patterns you can see on display in the KS1 corridor.

In PE we are continuing with our theme of Gymnastics. All of us are really confident performing an egg roll, a teddy bear roll and a log roll as well as exploring different balances and jumps.

We have had such a busy week we are really looking forward to resting and recharging over the weekend. Please remember to read over the weekend and keep moving up the branches on our reading tree.
